Michael Thomas joins CON

Michael Thomas“I come from a family of educators,” said Michael C. Thomas, MS, NP-P, APRN, ANCC. “My two grandfathers and father have all worked in higher education as professors and administrators. My grandmothers were also educators.” His mother also recently returned to school to become a teacher for individuals with special needs.

During the past year, Thomas worked as adjunct faculty for the college, but at the beginning of the school year, he joined the college as full-time faculty. As an assistant teaching professor Thomas will teach communication for nurses and psych/mental health nursing courses.

Thomas completed his bachelor’s in nursing at Utah Valley University and obtained a master’s in nursing as a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner at the University of Utah.

Thomas is a golfer, regularly competing in men’s leagues to relieve stress from the week. He is also a loyal Jazz fan, and a skier. As a young 16-year-old boy, Thomas taught skiing lessons, which sometimes meant wearing a bear costume. The visibility of the bear suit proved to be difficult, causing Thomas to fall from the ski lift on one occasion. “The costume drew a lot of attention and snowballs,” he said.

Michael is happily married to Lori, and they have three children. He is still surprised that she married him since he was quite awkward when they were dating. “I remember during one date,” he explains, “we were watching a movie, and I wanted to put my arm around her. Scared and not knowing what to say, I said, ‘You might think I’m weird for asking this, but can I put my arm around you?’ Thankfully, she said yes.”

The college is pleased to have Thomas at the college full-time, and it looks forward to the difference he will make in students’ lives and education.
